Octopath Traveler I and II Coming to Switch 2 in October

Square Enix's acclaimed HD-2D-style RPGs are getting new native versions for Nintendo's latest console, with technical improvements over the originals released on Switch.

Two remastered journeys

Square Enix has announced that Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 in the West on October 1, 2026. In Japan, the digital versions became available on the day of the announcement, while the rest of the world will have to wait until early October to get their hands on the titles.

Developed by Acquire in partnership with Square Enix, the series made its mark by popularizing the HD-2D look, which combines pixel-art sprites with lighting, depth and three-dimensional effects. The first game debuted in 2018 and helped cement the aesthetic that the studio would reuse in projects such as Triangle Strategy and the Dragon Quest III remake.

What changes on Switch 2

According to Square Enix, both games were optimized from the original Switch versions, with improved resolution and frame rate. This is therefore a technical update that promises a sharper and smoother presentation, taking advantage of the new console's more powerful hardware, rather than a remake or brand-new content.

A word of warning for those who already own the games: the manufacturer confirmed that there will be no upgrade path for owners of the original Switch versions. In addition, save data is not compatible between the two generations, which means starting the journey through Orsterra and Solistia from scratch if the player moves to Switch 2.

Prices and formats

Pre-orders are already open. Each game will cost US$59.99 in United States stores, available in both digital and physical formats. There is also a bundle with both titles for US$74.99, offered in digital version only.

The physical editions will use the Game-Key Card format, the card that does not contain the full game recorded on the media and requires downloading the content — an approach increasingly common among third parties in the Switch 2 lineup. Regional prices for Brazil have not yet been announced.

A good entry point

For those who have never tried the franchise, the announcement works as an invitation. Both games are praised for their soundtracks, for the narrative freedom of following eight distinct protagonists, and for a turn-based combat system focused on breaking enemy defenses and building up boost points. The second entry, released in 2023, refined the formula with a day-and-night cycle system and new progression mechanics.

With the arrival on Switch 2, Square Enix reinforces the console's RPG catalog during a period of fierce competition for releases. It remains to be seen whether the technical improvements will justify the purchase for those who have already completed both adventures in the previous versions.
